Members got a glimpse into the huge impact of Rotary’s youth programs, as eight students from Sage Creek High School shared their experiences attending the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) camp. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Carlsbad, these students spent a transformational weekend at a three-day leadership program held in Idyllwild—an experience many described as “the best they’ve ever been to.”

Dave Saviage kicked off the evening’s program, “RYLA: The Student’s Perspective,” introducing the students and sharing how each one was carefully selected through a thoughtful interview process. Dave also played a key role in organizing the club’s participation, ensuring the students had the opportunity to represent Sage Creek at this premier District event.

The students’ enthusiasm was contagious as they took turns reflecting on what they learned, who they met, and how the experience changed them. Several couldn’t stop talking about Fary Moini's unforgettable talk about her work via the Golden Triangle Rotary to establish a school for girls in Afghanistan. The Culture Walk experience was also a powerful moment to learn about connection, growth, empathy, and discovering the strength in vulnerability.

This year’s RYLA experience was made possible by a dedicated team of Rotarians. Tina Ray serves on the District 5340 RYLA Committee that plans the annual event. Maria Callander stepped up to host the very important facilitator's lounge this year (providing a rare moment of quiet for Rotary volunteers during the busy weekend).  Jan Zachry, Joe Donnelly, and Rachael Hopkins served as facilitators, guiding students through leadership activities, discussions, and personal development exercises.

Adding to the special evening, Sage Creek High School Principal Josh Way attended to support his students and witness firsthand the impact of RYLA on their lives.

Our club is proud to have sponsored these eight outstanding students—including our Rotary Youth Exchange student Coco—and grateful to all the members who made their participation possible. Their stories reminded us all why RYLA matters: it empowers the next generation of leaders to find their voice, build their confidence, and step into their potential.
