Join us as we welcome our SD County District Attorney, Summer Stephan, to update us on the current status of human trafficking in SD County. "Summer Stephan served as a Deputy District Attorney in San Diego County for 28 years, rising through the ranks to appointments as Chief of the DA’s North County Branch and Chief of the Sex Crimes and Human Trafficking Division, which are special victim units that she pioneered. In 2012, she was appointed Chief Deputy District Attorney. In 2017, she was appointed District Attorney. On June 5, 2018, she was elected District Attorney. She was named the 2017 Southern California District Attorney of the Year by Crime Victims United." https://www.sandiego.gov/gangcommission/about/stephan "For Summer, it’s always about justice… true justice for all. She vowed to test every rape kit in San Diego - and delivered - to protect survivors of sexual assault and track down their perpetrators. ... Summer pioneered San Diego’s Sex Crimes and Human Trafficking Division, a Special Victims Unit that’s become a national model for stopping abuse and exploitation of women and girls." https://www.summerstephan.com/

Ever wondered what it would be like to be along the front lines of an active war zone, in another country, as a volunteer who stepped up to help? Join us to hear a firsthand account. Gordon Permann, former Navy, wingwalker, marathon runner, cancer survivor & active volunteer will share his recent experience helping to feed up to 2,000 people per day for weeks at a time. "Through minefileds and bomb-cratered roads... meeting thousands of orphans, hundreds of shattered families from one brutalized village after another... reminding people that they were not alone in their struggle, that they mattered, that we saw what they were going through." |

We are honored to welcome Mel Vernon, Captain of San Luis Rey Band of Mission Indians, to share with us on life in the community today. "There are many Luiseño people living today, some on reservations, but most of them in towns and cities. The San Luis Rey Band of Luiseño Indians has kept its identity as a people within the local communities that now exist on ancestral tribal lands. Elective leadership committees and volunteers help to oversee the affairs of the San Luis Rey Band. Today the San Luis Rey Band of Luiseño Indians is constantly being challenged to save and preserve what remains of our great cultural past, and to create and share its heritage with future generations to come. The San Luis Rey Band of Luiseño Indians is associated with the other six Luiseño and Cupeño tribes, La Jolla, Pala, Pauma, Pechanga, Rincon, Saboba and their cultural departments as a Tribal Coalition, working together to preserve our sacred ancestral cultural heritage with local governments and museums. Thanks to our long-time Rotarian and honorary member Dr. Jeff Moses, the Rotary Club of Carlsbad has played a crucial role in supporting Tecate Smiles which organizes and provides free surgical care for underprivileged children in Tecate who have deformities such as cleft lip and cleft palate. In the USA and Mexico, one in every 650 children has a cleft deformity. If left untreated, the deformity can cause dental problems, speech difficulties, inability to eat and the children can become social outcasts. Rotarians form the fabric by which this project is sustained. Donating your time and resources to Tecate smiles, will change these children’s lives immediately. The child comes to the clinic with the deformity and leaves without it. |
